Like most of Berks County, the area was inhabited originally by the Lenni Lenape Indians and later by Quakers and by German farmers. Perry, the hero of the Battle of Lake Erie. Then, in 1852, Perry was incorporated into a township with the name suggested years earlier by area veterans of the War of 1812, after Commodore Oliver H. However, the 1821 legislation languished, and 28 years passed before the Perry election district was actually established.
